Abstract

ABSTRACT
Waode Nurkholiza Aziz Nadia. SID 19010106081. EFL Students’ Challenges in
Attempting to Apply Self-regulated Language Learning in Speaking. Supervised
by: Abdul Halim, S. Pd., M. TESOL.
This study aims to investigate EFL students’ challenges in attempting to
apply self-regulated language learning in speaking. Data were collected from 14
students' reflection who took speaking class in the English department. The
research method used a qualitative approach with reflective journal instruments.
The data that has been collected by the participants used reflection and then
analyzed using thematic coding. This study describes some of the challenges that
students face when applying self-regulated learning and provides in-depth
reasons. The findings indicate that a majority of participants experienced several
common challenges, including issues related to student motivation, distractions
during learning, and difficulties with reading comprehension. Specifically,
motivational barriers encompassed procrastination, boredom, laziness, and
struggles with emotional regulation. Additionally, students reported distractions
from mobile phone and surrounding individuals while studying. Furthermore,
difficulties in understanding academic texts were linked to a limited vocabulary.
All of the challenges encountered by students have a detrimental effect on their
academic performance.
