Abstract

ABSTRACT
Heni Rahayu SID 2021010106004. “Exploring the Professional Geographies of
EFL Pre-Service Teachers in Teacher-Student Instructional Interaction During
Field Teaching Practice” Supervised by Dewi Atikah, M.A. TESOL and Ilfan
Askul Pehala, S.Pd., M.Hum.
This study aims to explore the professional geographies of EFL (English as a
Foreign Language) pre-service teachers in teacher-student instructional interactions
during field teaching practice. The research design employed a qualitative,
utilizing semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of ten pre-service
teachers at an Islamic university in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The data were
collected through semi-structured interview, focusing on the professional
geographies that influence teacher-student instructional interaction. The author
analyzed the data using thematic coding, which involved identifying patterns,
themes, and categories within the data Saldaña (2014) . following the framework
established by Marsh (2010). The findings of the study indicated that there are two
key aspects of professional geographies, namely: professional knowledge and
professional practice. Professional knowledge is the teachers understanding of
students needs, learning styles, cultural backgrounds and interests, especially in the
EFL context and professional practice in teaching refers to the process of planning
and implementing strategic teaching activities to meet the diverse learning needs of
students. This research implies that understanding and navigating the professional
geographies of teaching is critical for pre-service teachers in field practice.
