Abstract

ABSTRACT
Ratianarimamy Niriko Elysa. NIM. 2022010106070. "A Malagasy Pre-Service
Teacher’s Communication Experience in Indonesian English Teaching Context:
An Autoethnography" Supervised by Dr. Sitti Nurfaidah, S.Pd., M.Ed. and Anita
Rezki, S.Pd., M.Pd.
This study explores the communication experiences of a Malagasy pre-service
teacher during her English teaching practicum in Indonesia, viewed through an
autoethnographic lens. As international teaching mobility expands across the
Global South, understanding how foreign pre-service teachers navigate
communication challenges in culturally diverse contexts becomes essential. The
study aims to reveal how intercultural communication, identity negotiation, and
emotional adaptation intersect within a foreign classroom setting. Employing a
qualitative autoethnographic approach, the researcher critically reflected on her
personal experiences documented in a reflective journal during a 40-days
practicum at a secondary school in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. The data were
analyzed thematically using Byram’s ( 1997) Intercultural Communicative
Competence (ICC) model. The findings highlight four main themes:
communication barriers, emotional responses, cultural adaptation, and identity
negotiation. These experiences illustrate the complex process of developing
intercultural awareness and communicative competence in a foreign teaching
environment. The study concludes that teaching abroad fosters personal and
professional growth through continuous reflection, adaptability, and empathy. It
underscores the importance of preparing pre-service teachers for intercultural
engagement and encourages teacher education programs to include reflective and
identity-based learning components.
