Rosiana SID 16010106056. “The Benefit of Extensive Reading Activity to Foster
EFL Students' Reading Skills” Supervised by: Suhartini Syukri, S.Pd.I., S.Pd.,
M.Pd, and Nur Hasanah Safei M.Ed.
This study aims to explore EFL students‟ challenges in creating digital
content during online service learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflection
data were collected from six EFL students of the English Education Department at
a higher education institution in Southeast Sulawesi, who were selected based on
their participation in an online service-learning program. The data were analyzed
using a qualitative approach. The findings revealed that the participants
experienced three main phases in the process of creating digital content: the
preparation stage, emotional experiences before and after content creation, and
challenges encountered during the process. During the preparation stage, the
participants engaged in planning activities, preparing instructional materials,
conducting consultations, and arranging technical tools for video production.
Furthermore, the participants reported experiencing both positive and negative
emotions throughout the program. In implementing online service learning during
the COVID-19 outbreak, the participants faced various internal and external
challenges related to emotional readiness, technical skills, and learning conditions
This study contributes to the existing body of literature on extensive reading in
EFL contexts by providing empirical evidence of its benefits in fostering students‟
reading skills, including reading comprehension, vocabulary development, reading
fluency, and positive reading attitudes.
