Abstract

ABSTRACT

Nurul Magpira SID 19010106005. EFL Students' Cognitive Engagement in EFL
Learning Context: A Narrative Review. Supervised by: Dr. Sitti Nurfaidah, S.Pd.,
M.Ed. and Aswar Abidin, M.Pd.

This study explored how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students cognitively
engaged in language learning environments through a narrative review of 25 peerreviewed

articles published between 2013 and 2023. The research addressed a
critical gap in understanding the mental effort and strategic learning behaviors
exhibited by EFL students, elements that essential for academic success but often
underexamined in language education. Using a qualitative narrative review
approach, the study synthesized findings on cognitive engagement through matrix
analysis and thematic coding. The results identified four recurring dimensions of
cognitive engagement in EFL contexts: self-regulated learning, active participation
in class activities, comprehension of learning material, and critical thinking.
Students demonstrated self-directed learning behaviors such as planning and
monitoring, engaged collaboratively through classroom activities, actively
processed instructional feedback, and applied critical reasoning to learning tasks.
These findings suggested that cognitive engagement was multifaceted and deeply
intertwined with learners’ autonomy, participation, and reflective thinking. The
implications underscored the need for EFL educators to foster learning
environments that supported strategic thinking, student agency, and critical
engagement. By identifying specific cognitive behaviors and instructional contexts
that promoted engagement, the study offered practical guidance for enhancing
teaching practices and improving language learning outcomes in EFL classrooms.
