Abstract

ABSTRACT

in Southeast Sulawesi. Adopting a qualitative case study design, this
research involved five EFL pre-service teachers who had completed a one-month
teaching practicum. Participants were selected through purposive sampling based
on specific criteria, and data were collected via semi-structured interviews
conducted through WhatsApp voice notes. The data were analyzed thematically
using Braun and Clarke (2012) framework. Furthermore, the interpretation of the
findings was guided by Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) coping theory, which
categorizes coping strategies into problem-focused and emotion-focused
approaches. As for the results, the findings reveal that the pre-service teachers
employed both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies to manage
their teaching anxiety. Problem-focused strategies included planful problem
solving and seeking social support, which emerged as the most frequently applied
approaches due to their direct role in addressing classroom challenges and
supporting teaching preparation. Meanwhile, emotion-focused strategies such as
self-controlling, distancing, and positive reappraisal were used to regulate
emotions and maintain confidence throughout teaching activities. Overall, these
findings indicate that pre-service teachers tend to adopt proactive, task-oriented
coping strategies supported by emotional regulation to overcome anxiety in real
classroom contexts. This research highlights the importance of coping strategy
awareness in teacher education programs and suggests the integration of copingbased

training to better prepare future teachers in managing psychological
pressure and improving teaching performance during practicum experiences.
