Abstract
ABSTRACT
Pinkan Mulyani. SID. 2021010106015. "Exploring the Cultural Geographies in
English Classroom Management: Insight from EFL Pre-Service Teachers during
Field Teaching Practice." Supervised by Nur Hasanah Safei, M.Pd. and Ilfan
Askul Pehala, S.Pd., M.Hum.
This research investigates how EFL pre-service teachers experience
cultural geographies in their classroom management during field teaching
practice. Using a qualitative case study design, this study explores the cultural
dimensions that shape pre-service teachers' classroom behaviors, focusing on how
they adapt, negotiate, and regulate their emotions within culturally shaped school
environments in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. Eight EFL pre-service teachers
were selected through purposive sampling based on their teaching practicum
experiences in various public schools. Data were collected via semi-structured
online interviews and analyzed thematically using the framework of Cultural
Geographies from Hargreaves’ (2001) theory of Emotional Geographies. The
findings reveal three major themes: (1) Adaptation to School Cultural Norms, (2)
Value Conflict between Personal Beliefs and Institutional Rules, and (3) Emotion
Regulation Based on Implicit Norms. These findings indicate that pre-service
teachers often adapt their teaching strategies, suppress personal emotions, and
confront internal conflicts to align with the implicit expectations of the school
culture. The study contributes to teacher education by emphasizing the need to
prepare pre-service teachers for the emotional complexities of classroom
management shaped by local norms and values. It also suggests that emotional
and cultural competencies are critical for navigating real-world teaching
environments, particularly in diverse and hierarchical educational settings.
