Abstract

ABSTRACT
Mugaida Syifa SID. 2021010106034. "EFL Teacher Belief on Seating
Arrangement Influence on Students' Interaction in English Class." Supervised by
Dewi Atikah, MA. TESOL and Nur Hasanah Safei, M.Pd.

This qualitative case study explores EFL teacher’s beliefs regarding how seating
arrangements influence students’ interaction in English class. The data were
obtained through classroom observations and interviews with a female English
teacher from a junior high school in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Guided by
Johnson and Johnson’s (2005) Social Interdependence framework, the study
identified five key indicators: Positive Interdependence, Promotive Interaction,
Effort to Achievement, Appropriate Social Skills, and Positive Relationship. The
findings reveal that the teacher believed U-shaped and circular seating
arrangements fostered two-way communication, collaboration, and confidence
among students. Positive interdependence was observed as students relied on one
another to achieve shared learning goals, while promotive interaction occurred
when they exchanged ideas and provided mutual support. These seating
arrangements also encouraged students to strive for better performance, improved
their social interaction skills, and strengthened positive relationships in the
classroom. The implication of this study highlights that teachers should design
seating arrangements not only for order and visibility but also to promote
interaction, student motivation, and confidence. Therefore, flexible and interactive
layouts such as the U-shape and circle should be integrated into classroom
management strategies to enhance communication and foster an inclusive and
supportive EFL learning atmosphere.
