Abstract

ABSTRACT
Nunsida SID 17010106032. ”The Small Group Discussion Implementation in
EFL Classroom on Students’ Willingness to Communicate”. Supervised by:
Suhartini Syukri, S.Pd.I., S.Pd., M.Pd.
This qualitative study is aimed to investigate the implementation of small group
discussions in EFL classrooms on students‟ willingness to communicate in one of the
higher Islamic universities in Kendari. This study utilized reflection and interviews in
collecting the data. The data was gathered from 15 participants from the speaking class.
Data were collected based on three questions given to participants through reflection.
Then, the results of the reflection were further deepened by conducting interviews with
several selected participants to obtain more accurate data. Following MacIntyre, Clément,
Dörnyei, and Noels's (1998) framework of willingness to communicate, this study found
that there are three main emerging themes as the reasons for the participant‟s willingness
to communicate in small groups. The first main theme is students‟ willingness to
communicate in small group, the second main theme is students‟ willingness to
communicate as means of learning, and the third theme is students‟ willingness to
communicate as means of socialization. This study implies that the implementation of
small group discussion should be encouraged more in speaking classrooms.
