Abstract

ABSTRACT
Ismad Fuadi Jufri. SID. 18010106050. EFL Students‟ Mastery Goal Orientations

This study intends to identify EFL Students' mastery goal orientations in
learning speaking from YouTube videos. Data were collected using reflections
and semi-structured interviews of three EFL students in the English Education
Department who have experience learning to speak from YouTube. Through a
thematic analysis method, the data was analysed qualitatively on seven levels to
address this study‟s focus on seven aspects: challenging tasks, persistence when
faced with failure, higher levels of task enjoyment, positive attitudes toward
learning (Elliot & Harackiewicz, 1996), self-regulated learning purposes, learners‟
response behaviours to YouTubers‟ English-teaching videos, and a comparison
between learning English on YouTube and formal learning in the classroom. This
study revealed seven main themes emerge, i.e., exploring different types of
YouTube channels, YouTube channels being considered as a source of
knowledge, accessing the YouTube channel at a certain time, attempting to
understand the content, solving problems while watching, affected by the content,
and comparing learning outside and inside the classroom. This study implies that
educators and students can minimise errors and shortcomings in this project based
on the belief that mastery goal orientations can investigate more detailed
information.
