Abstract

Indadzil Ardhi. SID. 19010106026. Students' Reflection of Duolingo App Use to
Foster English Vocabulary Learning. Supervised by: Sarjaniah Zur,S.Pd.I., M.Pd.
and Suhartini Syukri, S.Pd.I., S.Pd., M.Pd.
This study explores students’ reflections on the use of Diolingo app to
foster their English vocabulary learning. The research employs a qualitative
methodology as a qualitative case study. The participants in this study consist of 8
non-English major students selected through purposive sampling. Data for this
research were obtained from students' written reflections and data from depth
interviews. Thematic analysis was conducted based on aspect of English
vocabulary learning adapted from Thombury (2002) and activity theory from
Engestrom (1987). The result of this study delves into the various strengths and
weakness of the Duolingo application in enhancing English vocabulary
comprehension among participants. The application offers several strengths, such
as convenient accessibility, an engaging gamified learning system, simplified
visualization of vocabulary, and a repetitive learning method that aids in
enhancing participants' vocabulary. However, a notable drawback is its
dependency on internet connectivity. The application's features, including
vocabulary displays relevant to daily life and the ability to construct sentences,
have been shown to support vocabulary comprehension by encouraging critical
thinking and creativity in them. Participants also emphasize the importance of
joining the Duolingo community, facilitating practice, discussions, and resource
sharing.
