Abstract

ABSTRACT
Tegar Sentosa NIM 16010106087. Integrating Ice Breaking to Motivate
Students to Learn English. Supervised by Abdul Halim S. Pd, M. TESOL
This qualitative study discussed to what extent ice breaking motivates
students to learn English at one of the Islamic states junior high school in South
East Sulawesi. This study uses two instruments: questionnaire and reflection. This
study used two instruments: questionnaire and reflection. Questionnaires were
given twice, at the beginning before applying Icebreaking and at the end of the
meeting after applying Icebreaking to see changes and increase students'
motivation significantly. As in-depth information, at the end of the meeting the
researcher also provided reflection so that students could describe more clearly
what they felt and got during the Icebreaking application. This study revealed two
aspects: motivation and interest. Motivation aspects revealed that Icebreaking
supports students to be more motivated to study English. While the interesting
aspect revealed ice breaking helps students to eliminate boredom throughout the
teaching and learning process and engages the students with the class activities
more enjoyably. Additionally, some of the students also said that English subject
becomes their favorite subject.
