Umi Kalsum Safitri. SID. 16010106074. Situational Factor Influencing Students’
Willingness to Communicate in Online Speaking Classroom. Supervised by: Dr.
Sitti Nurfaidah, S.Pd., M.Ed. and Dewi Atikah, M.A.TESOL.
This study aims to determine situational factors influencing students’
willingness to communicate in online speaking classroom. The participants of this
study are 20 fourth-semester students majoring in the English Education
Department in one of the Islamic institutions in Southeast Sulawesi and enrolling
in an online based speaking class. This study used qualitative research. The finding
of this study revealed that many things make students want to talk in online class.
In addition to a teacher's teaching method, the situation in the classroom also affects
students' WTC. Several situational factors can affect students such as the topic in
speaking classroom, interlocutor, teacher role, classroom atmosphere, and bad
connection. This study found several factors that trigger students' willingness to
communicate in online classes consisting of these factors. These factors differ for
each student. These factors were also found to provide input on topics of interest
and kinship, as well as group discussions.
